Greetings and salutations to all from a community lurker. I am relatively new to the wide world of steamy goodness, and have very little in the way of proper steampunk attire. In order to remedy that, I was hoping that I might be directed towards some nice sites online where I may begin to create a personal steampunk look for myself.

Thank you kindly and cheers to you all!

Steamy waistcoat/jacket [Jan. 7th, 2010|09:25 am]

[mood | hopeful]

Hello all. :-) My boyfriend's been making clothes for himself for a while now and has been having a fine time of it! He's now branching out into making things for other people, and has put his first design on ebay here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Black-Moleskin-Sleeveless-Jacket-GOTHIC-STEAMPUNK_W0QQitemZ320469159606QQcategoryZ3002QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BIEW%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D10%26ps%3D63

He's just taken a commission for one with sleeves (an extra £10 I believe) and may also be making a full length one in the near future. He'll have some other designs up soon too, so even if you don't necessarily like this particular model it's probably worth bookmarking him for future reference. :-)

I'm sure if you ask nicely he'd be able to make this in all sorts of different fabrics too!

A long while ago I believe that someone in this community posted information about a Steampunk convention in Michigan, I want to say it would be in May. Silly me, I didn't bookmark the website. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, or is part of planning said con could you let me know what the website is?

DIY Steampunk Pants [Jan. 6th, 2010|02:34 pm]

For our last New Years Eve at the Edison I wanted some cool new pants. So i went to Target, bought a pair of $10 canvas pants, and then did this.

They have survived many washings already, and are just find (it is patio furniture paint!) and they don't smell any more like "paint" then any freshly printed garment.

Miss Hartigan [Jan. 5th, 2010|03:06 pm]

[jawberry]
I'm trying to put together a "Miss Hartigan" Costume from Doctor Who Special - The Next Doctor. I'll be attending a Steampunk Worlds Fair in May and I'd like to showcase it... Any thoughts?

Here's an approximate picture of the dress:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/blue1622/a2j_rth-1.jpg

I'm sure there are better pictures of the head-gear but here's one...
http://doctorwho.sonicbiro.co.uk/graphics/avatars/aliens/hartigan03.jpg

The eyes I can just get contacts for but I guess a wig for her hair and I'd have to find the necklace and gloves as well? I recently have been keeping my hair short and there's not enough time to grow it out between now and May...

Anxious to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

The League of S.T.E.A.M. presents "An Evening with the Unfamiliar: Scientific Investigations of Paranormal Oddities"

Come join us as The League of S.T.E.A.M, famed inventors and paranormal experts, host an unforgetable evening of steam-powered thrills, ectoplasmic oddities and supernatural curiosities. Prepare to be amazed by the latest in scientific advance in spectral detection and containment.

Melding staged and improvised performance, exquisitely hand produced costumes and inventions, The League creates a multi-sensory reimagining of the fascinations and foibles of the Victorian past. Weaving eloquently between a sense of wonder at science and immersing their audience into the flow of history they bring a wide array of artistic production to each show. Engaging with the many members of the collective might at turns bring to mind the scientific feuds of Tesla and Edison or the folklore of Stoker & Crowley, to the whimsies of Jules Vern, or the prescient ideas of Babbage.

Join us for a highly eclectic evening in the Victorian parlor-style featuring functional gear, spiritual encounters, interactive demonstrations, lectures, various media presentations, and perhaps a cigar & some absinthe amongst much more.

Looking for help. [Jan. 5th, 2010|02:56 am]

steamfashion

[goosestep_lion]
I hope this is allowed here.. =O I'm looking for a little help. I would like to commission someone to help me design and create a steampunk outfit with a little Scottish flare to wear with a partial fursuit (Which is a mask,  shoulder length paws, feet, and a tail). I would need the outfit by the middle or March for a convention and have no trouble sketching up a rough idea of what I'm looking for if a text description isn't good enough ( see under cut for the description).

You would be working with large sizes, such as XL shirt sizes and about a 48" waist and will need to be able to accommodate the costume I will wear with the clothes (since there are shoulder length paws I'd need sleeves that are not full length, ect.)

These are my ideas. )

I am editing a response here because I had so many comments and currently don't have the time to reply to each one individually. I will break this down into topics.

Goggles:  I prefer to wear the goggles around my neck because I will be wearing a full face mask who's under-structure would be squeezed in an unnatural way because it is made of foam and not flesh and bone like our own heads. I have seen goggles worn on fursuits before but they generally have the straps let all the way out and are pinned in some way to the mask to hold them in place, from what I have seen. As this is not really the look I am going for, I prefer to hang them around the neck when not in use.

Kilt : The reason I wanted slacks with my kilt is because I will not have full legs on this costume, only feet. I understand that it might be historically inaccurate but for the sake of not showing my human legs. Of course I would always wear the socks as stated and add some fur to them, just enough to cover my exposed legs. I apologize for all who were offended by the suggestion, I was just trying to make this costume work with the outfit. As I said, this idea is very much up to artistic interpretation and I have no trouble changing the concept or idea if the costume maker has a better idea than what I have presented.

Location: Swainsboro Georgia, about 3 hours from Atlanta, 1 hour and 45mins from Augusta, and about the same distance from Savannah Georgia.

Going to the Steampunk World's Fair and have nothing to wear! [Jan. 4th, 2010|07:55 pm]

steamfashion

[peacelovefandom]
I just found out that my significant other and I are going to get to attend The Steampunk World's Fair in Jersey this May. And although we've been talking about and lusting over steampunk costumes for a few years now, we have never actually taken the big plunge. But since we're now committed to this event, the pressure is on to get at least a basic outfit together!

Now, the rub is that neither of us knows a thing about sewing, so we'll be buying our costume pieces and making some small personalizations that are within our limited means. Basically, we'd love to support freelance costumers who do commission work. Is there a "recommended" list somewhere, or some trusted costumers you could point us to? We'd love some personal recommendations to help us get the ball rolling!

[erasammy]
So I've decided to hold a Pirate celebration on Sept 19, giving me eight months to prepare. I may be sewing all of my friend's clothing, and I was wondering if everybody here just kind of figured it out, or used patterns, or what? I want to make myself a Victorian/Steamy-esque dress (which I will then trail the bottom through some mud, make it sort of raggedy, and be a pirate), and my friends will probably need some sort of bloomers (probably most of us will be lower-class, while a few may use some of my lolita pieces and go as upper class pirates). Do you guys think that I, with minimum sewing experience (a few pillows and a basic shirt) but a lot of enthusiasm and dedication, could do in the next eight months? Also, what material do you all recommend for the cotton pieces?

Sorry to bother, since this may be a tad off topic, but I was hoping some of you guys would have experience sewing the Victorian pretty things.
